On its 236th birthday, here's a reminder of why America was truly the ultimate startup:

1. Started by folks who really, really wanted to work for themselves







2. Scrapped its original business plan, the Articles of Confederation, because it didn't have a revenue model.










3. Fought off some killer competition. Literally.











4. Unlike most startups, it's still around today.

















5. Began as an idea among a few friends over a few beers.
